Tottenham Hotspur made an excellent start to their league campaign by winning their first three matches in a row, but it was followed by a horrendous performance against Watford last weekend as Spurs gave away a lead to lose the game 2-1 at Vicarage Road. The form of some of the club’s top players have slowly come under the spotlight, and now, Mauricio Pochettino needs to find a way to get the best out of his players after the international break.
One player who has struggled to get going for Spurs this season has been Harry Kane. The English centre-forward broke his August voodoo by registering two goals last month, but his performances have looked tired and disjointed so far.
A Tired Harry Kane = Spurs’ Pain
Kane had a long summer after his incredible contributions for the England national team in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. However, that also meant that the English forward missed a major chunk of Spurs’ pre-season and had little time to prepare himself for the new campaign.
Despite scoring two goals and creating one assist in four matches so far, the 25-year-old has been a frustrated figure up top in Pochettino’s first-team. One of his worst performances in a Tottenham shirt came in last Sunday’s match against the Premier League high flyers, Watford where he looked tired and hardly made impact in the opposition half.
It is clear that Kane needs some time to rest and get his sharpness back or else Spurs could suffer in the long run.
The Golden Boot Winner Of The 2018 FIFA World Cup Overstates His Value
Although Kane was the recipient of the prestigious golden boot award after scoring seven goals during the World Cup in Russia, his performances for England left a lot to be desired. He was lucky to score some of his goals and got an easy run of fixtures on his way to the semi-finals of the competition. Kane failed to deliver for the Three Lions in their crucial match against Croatia which saw England get knocked out of the tournament just before its final hurdle.
Hence, we should take his recent accomplishment with a pinch of salt.
No Worthy Backups
One thing is for sure, Spurs don’t have anyone prolific to call upon to replace Harry Kane which will be a big worry in itself. The likes of Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen are not good enough to replace someone of the quality of Kane. Thus, we can understand why Pochettino has been forced to play Kane even though the English international is looking tired and in need of rest.
Verdict
Kane’s recent form should be a significant cause for concern, and we sincerely hope that the forward can get some rest so that he is fit and firing on all cylinders after the international break.
