Tottenham Hotspur clashed with Watford at Vicarage Road earlier today looking to earn another victory going into the international break. They controlled the game in the first half but were denied by some resolute Watford defending.
However, Spurs finally found the breakthrough in the 53rd minute when Abdoulaye Doucoure scored an unfortunate own goal. The Hornets came back strong after conceding and were ready to throw everything but the kitchen sink in pursuit of an equaliser. The home side were rewarded for their brave response as Troy Deeney headed home the equaliser in the 69th minute.
Watford managed to net the winner in the 76th minute when Craig Cathcart scored with his well-timed header to keep Javi Gracia’s 100% win record intact this season.
Let’s take a look at how each Spurs player fared during the match against the Hornets.
GK: Michel Vorm – 5/10
The Tottenham goalie made an error in the first half when he gave away a corner from a goal-kick, but luckily for him, the Hornets could not capitalise on that mistake. Vorm was just a passenger for the two Watford goals as he saw his teammates crumble and give away three points in the second half.
CB: Toby Alderweireld – 5.5/10
The Belgian bossed the game in the first half and put on a good defensive performance for his side. However, he could have scored an own goal in the second half after Deeney’s cross struck his head and then the post.
CB: Davinson Sánchez – 6/10
He won a few good aerial duels, but Deeney overpowered him at times in the second half which would be a significant cause for concern.
CB: Jan Vertonghen – 6.5/10
The Belgian defensive ace made some beautiful challenges during the game and was unlucky to end up in the losing team.
CDM: Mousa Dembélé – 4/10
He gave away the ball in midfield quite often which invited the Watford attackers to put him under more pressure. The Belgian talent was also at fault for Watford’s second goal when he lost his marker, Craig Cathcart who punished him for his mistake.
RM: Kieran Trippier – 6/10
He made a few good runs down the right flank, and his crosses were more accurate towards the latter stages of the game when Spurs were chasing an equaliser.
CM: Christian Eriksen – 6/10
He struggled to make an impact in the first half. The Danish sensation tried two shots from range but couldn’t conjure up a goal for his team.
CM: Dele Alli – 6/10
He found it hard getting into the game and wasted a few good opportunities to score at Vicarage Road.
LM: Ben Davies – 5/10
He offered very little in the opposition half, and his only effort went high and wide over the Watford goal.
ST: Lucas Moura – 6.5/10
He was Spurs’ best player on the pitch during the first half. However, his effect on the game faded as the match went on.
ST: Harry Kane – 5/10
The English frontman was guilty of squandering a few excellent chances to score. He also failed to link up with his teammates as the Watford defenders marked him out of the game.
Substitutes:
ST: Fernando Llorente – 5/10
The Spaniard offered very little going forward.
CM: Harry Winks – 6/10
He made some driving runs behind the Watford midfield but didn’t do enough to score an equaliser.
LB: Danny Rose – N/A
He hardly had any time left to make an impact.
