According to The People, as reported by The Express, Liverpool are ready to tie down Joe Gomez on an improved contract following some of his commanding performances at the heart of the Reds defence over the past few weeks. It is believed that the English centre-back still has four years left on his current contract at Anfield, but he is set to get a significant pay hike after his excellent run of form in the Premier League.
Gomez’s Recent Form Has Been Remarkable
The 21-year-old has built up a solid partnership with Virgil Van Dijk in central defence, and the duo have managed to keep things tight at the back for the Merseyside club so far. Liverpool have shipped in just a single goal after four league matches, and their terrific defensive record is mainly down to the incredible contributions of their centre-halves.
Gomez: Liverpool’s Surprise Package Of The Season?
The expectations were already sky-high following Van Dijk’s big-money arrival from Southampton in January, but the form of Gomez has surprised a lot of people, including the loyal Liverpool fans. He has come in as a defensive option to fill in for Dejan Lovren as the Croat recovers from his 2018 FIFA World Cup commitments. However, Gomez has managed to not only grab his opportunities with both hands but also make the centre-back position his own after a series of impressive displays at Anfield.
We can expect Jurgen Klopp to give him more starts in the coming weeks even though Lovren could be available for selection after the international break. The English starlet started for the England national team last night but failed to impress for Gareth Southgate’s side who lost 2-1 against Spain. However, that performance was just a rare blip in what has been a very productive season from him until now.
Is It A Wise Move For The Reds?
The Reds of Merseyside are quite correct in trying to reward their young players because of their brilliant performances. If Gomez’s recent displays are anything to go by, then Klopp has a real gem in his hands. He is precisely the type of talent who would grow and develop into a world-class centre-half under the stewardship of Klopp at Anfield so Liverpool would be foolish not to tie him up on a new and improved deal.
The likes of Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson are Liverpool’s future so keeping them happy in the long-run would be the right way to go for the Merseyside giants.
