Manchester United legend Gary Neville is not willing to give up hope of witnessing his former team win the Premier League this season. In a recent interview with the Times, Neville shared his views on the Red Devils and said, “[I’m] still hopeful that somehow, through siege mentality more than anything, they can mount some sort of challenge that really just disrupts people,”
“If they can stay in it until January and maybe get one or two defenders in, they may have a chance, but I doubt it. I think United will be third or fourth.
“Believe it or not I liked the Tottenham game, certainly the first 40 minutes. I watched Burnley and thought it was really good. I am hopeful they have turned a corner.”
Man United’s Recent Success
The Reds of Manchester managed to turn the corner against Burnley earlier this month after two successive defeats at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur respectively. There is no doubt that Jose Mourinho’s men were the better team against the Clarets and deserved their 2-0 win away at Turf Moor.
Can The Red Devils Replicate A Winning Performance At Vicarage Road?
Despite making a mediocre start to this campaign, United are still just four points behind the reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City. So they should still have some hope of mounting a comeback, and it could start with an away victory against an impressive Watford side, who have made a 100% winning start to their season. If Mourinho can get the best out of his first-team players, then there is no reason why the away side cannot secure all three points from this weekend’s contest at Vicarage Road.
The Significance of Bringing In A Few Quality Defenders In January
It is no secret that Mourinho wanted to bring in a few defenders in the previous transfer window. However, the club’s failure to add some quality to their defence has harmed their title hopes, and now, there is a good chance that the Red Devils could be out of the race when the transfer window reopens in January.
It is imperative for Mourinho to bolster his backline in January so that the club can at least finish in the top 4 and qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.
Is Neville Correct By Claiming That United Can Still Challenge For The Premier League Title
Even with a few good additions, United doesn’t have a squad good enough for a title challenge this season. They have too many star players underperforming which Mourinho needs to rectify if he wants to stay in his job for the rest of the campaign.
It would be better for the Mancunians to concentrate on finishing in the top 4 and take one step at a time in their quest to have a successful season this term.
