Everton have made a solid start to their league campaign but have drawn too many of their league matches so far. The Toffees were held by Wolves, Bournemouth and Huddersfield Town but picked up three crucial points against Southampton at home. One of the main reasons for their failure to turn those draws into victories was because of the lack of firepower up top.
Everton’s Struggles Going Forward
The recent form of some of their attacking talents in Gylfi Sigurðsson and Cenk Tosun will be a cause for concern for Marco Silva. However, both players have managed to contribute to the team by working hard and setting up a lot of half chances in the final third.
The two players that have stood out so far are Richarlison and Theo Walcott. But the former was suspended after being sent off during the match against Bournemouth while the latter is currently out of action because of an injury.
Calvert-Lewin: A Possible Solution?
Silva is in need of a goal-threat up top and could seek help from the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Bernard and Oumar Niasse to add some firepower to the Everton attack. Calvert-Lewin has recently caught the eye with some glorious displays for the Merseyside club. He scored two goals against Rotherham last week, which was enough to help the Toffees book their place in the third round of the League Cup.
The English youngster was rewarded with a start last weekend as he managed to score the crucial equaliser against David Wagner’s men. It saved Everton from suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of Huddersfield Town in front of their home supporters at Goodison Park.
Why The English Youngster Deserves To Feature In Silva’s First XI?
Calvert-Lewin has already proven in recent weeks that he can be a genuine goal scorer and his versatility could mean he can fill in anywhere across the frontline. With both Richarlison and Walcott being ruled out for their upcoming clash against West Ham United, Silva could continue playing Calvert-Lewin in his first-team.
With three goals to his name in his last two starts, it would be foolish of Silva not to use him more often in the coming weeks. The 21-year-old boasts excellent pace and can run behind the opposing defences to cause havoc in the final third. His finishing also makes him a valuable asset for Everton. In the absence of some of his star players, Silva should look to start the English wonderkid more regularly. If he can take his chances, Calvert-Lewin could establish himself as a regular in Silva’s starting XI this season.
