Rangers were extremely busy in the transfer market as they secured one signing after another. Even when the transfer window ended, their juggernaut didn’t stop as they roped in Gareth McAuley who was a free agent. Now having made 15 signings already, maybe it would be too much to ask for Rangers to make another one but we believe there is still one magical free agent available who can have a massive impact on this Gers side. Bakary Sako, the former Crystal Palace and Wolves winger is available for free, and he can add a new dimension to the Teddy Bears squad.
Sako who is traditionally a winger but can play in a central attacking midfielder role has good years of experience behind him. He has featured in Championship’s team of the season before when he was with Wolves. The 30-year-old has the experience of playing in the Premier League, Championship and Ligue 1 and he would be a handful in the Scottish Premiership.
He was with Crystal Palace last before his contract expired in July this year. Last season, he managed 19 appearances for them and also got on the scoresheet six times. His strength on the ball and versatility would be a big asset for Gerrard.
The Malian international has proven himself in various positions in the final third, and his physicality also adds an edge to his overall game. His hold up play is worth mentioning, and he can be back up for the wingers as well as for forwards like Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty.
His work ethic while on the pitch is something which could make Gerrard sceptical about making a move for him, but a Premier League pedigree player who is available for free is worth considering. Rangers’ attacking outlet seems to entirely depend on the likes of Kyle Lafferty and Alfredo Morelos, and there hasn’t been enough support from the wings and other attacking midfielders. Sako can change that, and he can be a valuable addition to the Gers squad.
His best spell came with Wolves where he spent three years of his career. He managed a healthy tally of 38 goals and 36 assists in 124 appearances and was one of the brightest players in the Championship in his prime. Yes, he has lost a bit of his natural pace over the years, but he would still be a handful for defenders in the Premiership. He showcases quick feet in close quarters, and by his career numbers, he is often able to pick out a killer pass in the final third. This is something Rangers have lacked so far this season.
Gerrard has a massive task on hand in introducing all the players to his philosophy and integrating them into the team in a short span of time. Another signing could seem daunting, but the quality which Sako possess makes it a no-brainer for the former Liverpool man to go after him.
