Steven Gerrard was quick to go over a squad overhaul at Ibrox Stadium, after taking over Rangers in the summer. The Scottish giants were mediocre in their last campaign, but under Gerrard, they can challenge the best teams in the country this season. The former Liverpool midfielder signed some exciting names for the club and is busy trying to get the best out of them.
The likes of Kyle Lafferty and Alfredo Morelos have made a decent start to the campaign. However, Rangers have not won any of their last three games in all competitions, and questions are now asked of Gerrard’s summer business. The manager had the chance to sign a few established stars from the Premiership, most of who he ignored. One such player, who might make Gerrard regret his decision is Peterborough star, Jason Cummings.
The Edinburgh born striker graduated from the academy at Hibernian but joined Nottingham Forest just last year. He spent the second half of the previous season on loan at Ibrox Stadium, making 18 appearances for the Gers. He registered six goals and an assist in all competitions and was impressive in most of those games.
He came off the bench in nine of those games but showed enough quality for Rangers to retain his services. However, Steven Gerrard had different plans and decided not to extend his Ibrox Stay. Just a week ago, Cummings revealed that he would love to join Rangers this season as well, but Gerrard spent on the likes of Umar Sadiq and Kyle Lafferty, leaving no place for the 23-year old.
While Lafferty already has two goals to his name, Sadiq has made just one appearance off the bench and cannot be judged. But the start Cummings has made at Peterborough, his new club on loan, might make Gerrard regret his decision.
The 23-year-old attacker has turned into the first choice for Steve Evans in a short period. At the ABAX Stadium, Cummings scored six goals and created one assist in just seven league starts, and he is now a crucial part of Evans’ plans. He was also named the ‘League One Player of the Month’ for August, as he continues to impress for the English outfit.
These impressive figures would make Rangers fans believe that Cummings should have been retained this year as well. But the truth is that Gerrard prefers Lafferty and Morelos in his first team and might not have too much game time on offer for Cummings.
At 23, the Scottish international would want to play every game, and if he is made to wait on the bench, it might hamper his growth. At League One, he seems to have found his level and having him as a third choice makes no sense to anyone involved. Sadiq is a gifted footballer, and though Cummings would have been a better option in that role, there is no reason for the Gers fans to panic.
