Chelsea have still got their 100% winning record intact in the Premier League after they comfortably dismantled Cardiff City last weekend. The Pensioners have made an excellent start to their league campaign under Maurizio Sarri and are currently one of the dark horses to win the title. Most of their recent success has been down to the incredible form of Eden Hazard. However, one player whose contributions have gone under the radar is Olivier Giroud.
Giroud’s Recent Success
The 31-year-old forward had a terrific summer following his 2018 FIFA World Cup triumph with the French national team. He was also an integral part of Antonio Conte’s Chelsea squad who won the FA Cup last season. Although Giroud has still not managed to nail down a first-team place under Sarri, he has still made some significant contributions while coming off the bench.
Even without regular game time at Stamford Bridge, the French centre-forward has established himself as one of the best target men in English football as evidenced by his prolific goal-scoring record at West London. He has also linked up well with Hazard, especially in their last outing together against the Bluebirds. Giroud notched up with two assists during the game and set up his Belgian partner for a hattrick in front of the Chelsea supporters. He has also got an assist to his name in the home game versus Bournemouth earlier this month.
What Does The French Forward Add To Sarri’s Team?
Giroud is an old-fashioned centre-forward who is quite powerful in the air and has incredible strength to hold the ball up and bring his teammates into the game. He is also a capable finisher inside the opposition penalty area which makes him an ideal asset for Sarri’s team.
Can Giroud Be Sarri’s Secret Weapon At Stamford Bridge?
The form of Alvaro Morata in this calendar year has been concerning. Hence, Giroud could prove to be Sarri’s secret weapon as he seems like a perfect option up top who can make the lives of Hazard, Pedro and Willian much more comfortable in the opposition half. He has already built up a great understanding with his teammates, and if given enough first-team opportunities, the 31-year-old has still got enough in his locker to make a significant impact for the Blues.
Giroud could be the striker to help Chelsea mount a realistic title challenge this season. However, he needs to start scoring soon so that he can successfully establish himself in Sarri’s senior team.
