Chelsea faced off against West Ham United at the London Stadium earlier today hoping to continue their 100% winning record in the Premier League this season. The Pensioners began the encounter on the offensive and created some excellent opportunities in the first half. However, they were denied by some brave West Ham defending.
The second half was more of the same story with the Blues looking to make a breakthrough while the Hammers soaked up the pressure and sought to counter. However, both London sides missed a hatful of chances to win the match. The contest ended even stevens with both teams failing to score on the day.
Let’s take a look at how each Chelsea player fared during the match against the Hammers.
GK: Kepa Arrizabalaga – 7/10
The Chelsea goalie looked assured in goal and did his job well when called into action. He kept a clean sheet on the day, but it was not enough for the Pensioners to bag all three points from the contest.
RB: César Azpilicueta – 5.5/10
He lacked the cutting edge going forward and was often exploited by the pacey West Ham forwards.
CB: Antonio Rüdiger – 8/10
The German put in a commanding display at the back for the Pensioners. He bossed the game and dealt with the threat of Michail Antonio quite well.
CB: David Luiz – 6.5/10
The Brazilian centre-back made a few mistakes in defence but did enough to earn a clean sheet for the away team.
LB: Marcos Alonso – 6/10
The Spaniard looked a bit tired and jaded during the game. He struggled to make an impact down the left flank.
CM: N’Golo Kanté – 6/10
He was excellent defensively but lacked the cutting edge inside the Hammers penalty box.
CM: Jorginho – 7/10
He was magnificent with his distribution of the ball and hardly gave any possession away to the opposition while operating as a deep-lying holding midfielder.
CM: Mateo Kovacic – 6.5/10
The Croatian playmaker worked tirelessly at the centre of the park but failed to deliver a telling ball in the attacking third.
RM: Willian – 5/10
The Brazilian took up some beautiful positions up top, but he was wasteful with his chances and was one of the main reasons why Chelsea had such an off day going forward.
ST: Olivier Giroud – 6/10
The French centre-forward was aerially dominant but couldn’t do much else up top.
LM: Eden Hazard – 6/10
The in-form Belgian started off with a lot of promise but failed to make a difference on the day which would disappoint him.
Substitutes:
ST: Alvaro Morata – 5.5/10
He got into some promising positions and could have scored with his first touch. However, he lacked the finishing touch up top.
CB: Gary Cahill – 6/10
He replaced Rudiger and slotted in well in defence for the Pensioners.
CM: Ross Barkley – 6.5/10
The midfielder could have scored with a fantastic effort from long range but was denied by the Hammers keeper.
