Arsenal have made a mediocre start to their league campaign after losing their first two matches against Manchester City and Chelsea before bouncing back with two wins against West Ham United and Cardiff City respectively. However, one player that has caught the eyes with his outstanding cameos off the bench is Lucas Torreira. The Gunners fans are still baffled to see him not be a part of Unai Emery’s starting XI on a weekly basis.
The 22-year-old had a terrific 2018 FIFA World Cup with the Uruguayan national side earlier this summer which raised the expectations of the loyal Arsenal faithful. However, Emery decided to name him on the bench in all four league matches so far, and we have often seen him make a significant impact during the second half of those games.
Why Should Emery Opt To Start With Torreira?
The Uruguayan midfielder brought a lot of composure and dominance to the Gunners midfield in each of his four appearances for the North London club which is why it’s high time that Emery starts him in the upcoming matches. The midfield duo of Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi has flattered to deceive so far. The Swiss midfielder, Xhaka has struggled with his performances for Arsenal over the past year while the young Frenchman, Guendouzi is still learning his trade and his inexperience has not helped Emery’s side at times.
Lucas Torreira Vs Matteo Guendouzi
Torreira is far more experienced than the French youngster, and it has clearly shown in their performances so far. It’s a no contest between the two and Emery should opt to bring the Uruguayan midfielder in to provide more quality in the Arsenal midfield. Guendouzi is destined for big things at North London if he can continue with his development under Emery’s tutelage.
Lucas Torreira Vs Granit Xhaka
A lot of Arsenal supporters believe that Xhaka needs to be dropped as he has failed to show any signs of improvement this season. The Swiss midfielder is out of form, and except for a rare goal or an assist, his contribution to the Gunners first-team has been questionable.
Verdict
Lucas Torreira is probably the best holding midfielder that Emery has at his disposal. Hence, he should start him sooner rather than later or else risk losing a few matches in the coming weeks. The Uruguayan can read the game well, is composed on the ball and would be a fantastic shield while operating just ahead of the Gunners backline.
