Newcastle United have made a disappointing start to this campaign following another unsuccessful summer transfer window. The Magpies are in deep financial trouble as their owner Mike Ashley is reluctant to back Rafael Benitez in the transfer market. Hence, their results have suffered in the league this season, and now the Tyneside outfit finds themselves in the 18th spot with a tally of 2 points after six league matches.
Benitez needs to turn their fortunes around in the coming weeks if Newcastle are to steer clear of relegation trouble. However, a run of favourable results would only act as a smokescreen to a more significant concern as they are in dire need of bringing in some fresh faces when the transfer window reopens in January.
Here are three players that the Magpies boss needs to sign if he wants to lead Newcastle out of trouble this season.
Divock Origi
The Liverpool outcast is hardly getting any game time under Jurgen Klopp and needs to move on in search of greener pastures. He could be an ideal solution to Newcastle’s attacking woes up top. The Magpies have just managed to score four goals in six league matches which is why the addition of Origi would be a welcome one even if it is on a temporary basis.
Daniel Ayala
The Middlesbrough defender has already put in a number of solid displays at the back which has helped his club climb to the second position of the Championship table. The Boro can currently boast of the best defence in the English second tier, and Ayala’s contributions have been instrumental in their recent good run in the Championship. The Spanish centre-back could flourish under the guidance of Rafael Benitez at St. James’ Park. That is why Newcastle should consider signing him in January.
Phil Foden
The Manchester City youngster put on a classy display in midfield against Oxford United on Tuesday night and showcased why he is so highly-rated by scoring a goal and setting up another at the Kassam Stadium. There is no doubt that Foden has incredible potential and could be nurtured into a future superstar in the Premier League. However, for now, he needs to play regularly to continue with his development and Newcastle United could be an ideal destination for him.
The Magpies could consider making a loan move for his services in January as he would be a perfect fit for Benitez’s team and will have the freedom to express himself in front of the loyal Toon Army at St. James’ Park.
