Chelsea have made an outstanding start to this Premier League campaign following five successive league victories in a row. The Pensioners are looking like they could be the dark horses to challenge for the league title this season. However, Maurizio Sarri would be aware that there is still a long way to go! The Italian head coach would look to improve his squad in January as he has a few weaknesses to address in his squad.
The Blues are still lacking firepower up top, with Alvara Morata looking like a shadow of his former self. Moreover, Sarri still needs a commanding centre-back if he wants his team to compete for the league title. Here are three players the Chelsea boss could look to recruit during the winter transfer window.
Saul Niguez (Atletico Madrid):
The Atletico Madrid star will be a perfect fit for Sarri’s style of play at Stamford Bridge. He is a class act in the midfield and has enjoyed a solid start to this campaign so far, after putting in a match-winning display for the La Liga giants in the UEFA Super Cup final versus Real Madrid. At 23, Saul is only getting better with age, and he still has his best years ahead of him which Sarri’s team could look to benefit from, in the next few years.
Kalidou Koulibaly (SSC Napoli):
The Senegalese centre-back was a beast in defence when Sarri was in charge at Napoli last season. He had a good 2018 World Cup campaign with Senegal and had begun this season with a string of commanding performances for the Naples-based club. At 27, Koulibaly is playing at his peak and will be a good fit for Chelsea as he is a type of player who can boss the Pensioners’ defence and help them challenge on all fronts this season.
Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich):
The Polish forward is highly experienced at the top level and knows what it takes to score goals on a regular basis. He is precisely the kind of forward Chelsea are in need of right now. The 30-year-old has started this campaign in great form, scoring seven goals in 6 matches for Bayern Munich in all competitions and might be tempted for a new challenge in England.
