Everton received an injury boost when Theo Walcott recovered on time to start their home game against West Ham United. However, things did not go well for the Toffees as they suffered a shock 3-1 loss at the hands of the Hammers in front of their loyal supporters at Goodison Park. Even Walcott’s inclusion was not enough for the Merseyside club to avoid defeat on Sunday.
Except for Walcott and Richarlison, Marco Silva’s men have struggled to be productive in the final third. To be fair, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has also chipped in with a few goals, but the form of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Cenk Tosun has been concerning, to say the least. The Icelandic international managed to find the back of the net versus West Ham, but it turned out to be a consolation goal for the home team.
Everton’s backline has also been shaky, but it has mostly been down to injuries to some of their first-team defenders like Michael Keane, Phil Jagielka, Yerry Mina and Seamus Coleman who are all missing in action. Here are three mistakes that the Everton boss needs to address if his side is to bounce back from their bitter home defeat last weekend.
Sort Out The Striking Department
Marco Silva has been over-reliant on the services of Cenk Tosun, but the Turkish striker has failed to score a single goal for the Toffees so far this season. Hence, it might be time for the Everton head coach to drop him and give some of the other forwards a chance in his starting XI. The likes of Oumar Niasse and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are well capable of leading the lines for the Merseyside outfit. Moreover, Walcott can also play as a centre-forward which is why Silva needs to make a change or else risk losing out in the coming weeks.
Walcott Looks Unfit
Even though Silva decided to start with Walcott, it was clear that the English speedster was not looking 100% fit to begin the match. Hence, the Portuguese boss needs to rotate his squad more effectively and get the best out of his other wing options in Bernard and Ademola Lookman.
Figure Out The Best Midfield Combo
Idrissa Gueye has been a worthy starter in Silva’s first-team. However, the Toffees manager needs to figure out about who his best midfield partner would be? Both Tom Davies and Kieran Dowell could be possible options ahead of Morgan Schneiderlin who have looked a bit out of place of late.
