Tottenham Hotspur have not signed anyone in the transfer market, and many are sceptical about their approach, but we feel that it has been a decent transfer window for them as they have managed to hold on to all their key players. At one time, there were reliable reports of Spurs going after Scottish fullback Kieran Tierney as Danny Rose was expected to leave in the summer. However, Rose decided to stay at the club even though there were rumours of a fallout between him and Pochettino.
If the latest reports from the Mirror is to be believed, then Spurs can now land the talented left back at a cut-price deal in January as Celtic have failed to make it to the Champions League main draw. This was one of the biggest setbacks for the Hoops under Brendan Rodgers as in previous two seasons they made their way to the main competition. With no financial benefit of playing in elite European competition, the Bhoys would have to sell some players to generate funds in January.
Tierney can be available at as low as £10m now. Just a month back, the Hoops were demanding £20m for their young player of the season, but Spurs decided not to pursue further. At just 21, he is one of the fan favourites at the club, and he has made his way to the senior team through Celtic’s academy. Not only has he represented Scotland but, he has even captained them, and it wouldn’t be wrong to say that he is one of the biggest talents to come out of Scotland in recent times.
A Standout Star In The Scottish Premiership
He has everything to his game that a modern-day full-back needs and would be a good fit in the Premier League. The Scotsman is aggressive in his challenges, and while going up the pitch, he is devastating. Last season, he provided 11 assists and even went on to score four goals playing as a left back. He reads the game well and is blessed with good pace and to go with that he is tenacious and a hard working full back. Tierney has already won Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year three times in a row now, and the fullback quite clearly stands out in the Scottish league.
So there is no doubt about the potential of the player and what he can achieve if he keeps his head in the right place. However, until and unless there are departures in the January transfer window, Tierney would find it extremely tough to get any kind of game time at the North London club as Pochettino has two solid options in Danny Rose and Ben Davies. Though, we still believe Spurs can go after the 21-year-old fullback keeping the future in mind even if someone like Rose stays at the club in the January window.
Everton are also one of the parties interested in him as they have an ageing Leighton Baines in the left back spot but they already signed Lucas Digne from Barcelona, so we believe that Spurs should have a free run in landing this potentially world class fullback in the January window. Having not spent at all in the summer window, the club will have all the funds to work with and we can see some activity from the North London club through the midway point of the season as they try to break their trophy drought.
Verdict
As we have stated earlier in the article, unless Rose departs, we simply cannot see the sense in Spurs going after the youngster. However if Rose does end up departing in the January transfer window, it would be a completely different ball game. In that scenario, not going after Tierney would be a crime.
