Everton are still unbeaten so far this season. However, they have already had some big scares especially after going down to 10 men against Wolves in the opening game of the season and then, against Bournemouth last weekend. There is no doubt that Marco Silva needs to address his side’s disciplinary problems, but there is also another area which should slowly start to bug him.
The fact that Cenk Tosun is yet to get off the mark this season would be a cause for significant concern for the new Everton manager. The Turkish forward arrived from Besiktas at the start of this year with a reputation of scoring goals on a consistent basis. He initially struggled to get going in the Premier League under Sam Allardyce but soon found his feet and ended up scoring five goals for the Toffees last season.
The forward, who was once dubbed as ‘The Turkish Harry Kane’ has struggled in front of goal so far this campaign with just two assists to his name. He is working hard for the Blues of Merseyside but could be in line to be replaced soon if he does not improve on his goal-scoring record in the next few weeks.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin recently got a rare start up top while facing off against Rotherham United when he scored a brace to help Everton qualify into the next round of the League Cup. The English forward has mostly appeared from the bench but could be inching closer towards a regular starting spot under Marco Silva if Tosun doesn’t start scoring soon.
Calvert-Lewin offers a lot more pace up top while his finishing has also improved over the past few years. The 21-year-old has a bright future in English football so Silva would be foolish not to give him a shot in the first-team. He has 11 goals and 7 assists to his name after making a total of 51 appearances for the Merseyside club.
Should Marco Silva Replace Tosun With Calvert-Lewin?
The Portuguese manager has a big decision on his hands on whether to continue with Cenk Tosun as the only centre-forward up top or play a more pacy Calvert-Lewin who can run behind opposition defences and be a threat on the counter.
Maybe an ideal solution would be to give the Turkish striker a start against Huddersfield Town and if he still does not score in that match, then bring in Calvert-Lewin for the next couple of games.
