After Rangers managed to gain promotion back to the Scottish Premiership in 2016, the Glaswegian outfit initially struggled to score enough goals up top. They finished the 2016-17 top-flight campaign with just 56 goals to their name, which was a whopping 50 goals less than their local rivals, Celtic.
However, the Gers managed to bring in Alfredo Morelos from HJK Helsinki in the summer of 2017 with the hope that he would be able to shoulder the goal-scoring responsibilities at the Ibrox Stadium. At the mere age of 21, the Colombian wonderkid managed to have a magnificent debut campaign for the Teddy Bears last term when he scored 18 goals while delivering eight assists in 43 matches across all competitions.
His outstanding contributions on the pitch helped the Gers finish the previous campaign as the top-scorers of the Scottish Premiership with 76 goals to their name, four ahead of the Hoops. Going by the stats, it was clear that the South American forward had played an influential role after joining the Glaswegian heavyweights last summer.
A lot was expected out of him before the start of this new season, especially after the appointment of Steven Gerrard earlier this year. However, Morelos initially struggled to get going but soon got his name on the scoresheet in his third start of the campaign during a UEFA Europa League clash against NK Osijek last month.
He was successful at building on that tally and scored an incredible hattrick away at Kilmarnock on Sunday to take his tally to 6 goals in 9 matches for the Light Blues so far this season.
The Colombian’s goal-scoring prowess is second to none in Scotland which is why Gerrard should do everything in his power to hang on to the forward’s services for the long-term. At such a young age, Morelos is only getting better with more game time and has a bright future at the Ibrox Stadium if the club can hold on to him for the near future.
The 22-year-old is blessed with a lot of pace and power which helps him lead the lines so effectively for the Gers. He is quick, agile and knows how to find the back of the net. Morelos also has an uncanny ability to score when his team needs him the most which is one of the many reasons why the Scottish side cannot afford to lose him this summer. Considering the fact that Rangers severely lack firepower up top as of this moment, he is bound to get a lot of first-team minutes in the coming months.
Who knows? If the Colombian starlet keeps on registering his name on the scoresheet on a consistent basis, then maybe he can finally get his dream move to a bigger side in a few years time. For now, keeping him at the Ibrox would be the best move for all parties as Gerrard can provide him with an ideal environment to help him develop as a centre-forward and take his game to the next level.
