Manchester United are hours away from sealing a big money move for Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld this summer. According to the Mirror, the Red Devils are closing in on the Belgian international and could wrap up the transfer within the next 48 hours.
The 29-year-old had a frustrating campaign last term when he only made 13 appearances for Spurs during the course of last season. However, he was a regular member of the Belgian national side and helped his team progress into the semifinals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. However, Alderweireld and co. were eventually beaten by France and ended up clinching a third-place finish in the competition.
It was earlier claimed that the North London side were demanding a fee in the region of £75m for their prized asset and were reluctant to lower their asking price for the defender. Some sources are now claiming that United have made a breakthrough in negotiations and are on the verge of completing a big-money deal for the Belgian’s services in the next 48 hours which will significantly improve Jose Mourinho’s defensive options at Old Trafford.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was aware of the fact that the Belgian defensive ace was ready to run down his current contract at White Hart Lane before departing the club once he became available on a cut-price deal. It is understood that Levy has now accepted that it would be best for business to allow the ex-Ajax star leave now at a premium price before his value significantly drops next summer.
