Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has urged the Merseyside club to make a move for Leicester City centre-back Harry Maguire ahead of Manchester United this summer. The former Reds star wants his team to make a sensational swoop of the English defensive ace with the transfer deadline looming on the horizon.
According to Sky Sports, the Red Devils will table another big-money offer to secure the services of Maguire but they need to cough up a world record transfer fee for a defender to persuade the Foxes to part ways with their prized asset.
United boss Jose Mourinho has been left frustrated with the lack of transfer activity this summer but Leicester are under no pressure to sell and is ready to hold out for a massive fee.
The 25-year-old played every minute of Leicester’s league campaign last term and impressed enough to earn a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Maguire was an integral member of the Three Lions team which managed to reach the semi-finals of the competition. However, England were knocked out by Croatia after extra time and ended up finish fourth.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Thompson revealed that he wants the Reds of Merseyside to bolster their defensive options by signing the English defender this summer. He was quoted to have said, ‘I like what Jurgen Klopp has done by trying to strengthen the players behind the front three and get more goals from that area,’
‘That part of the team is where you win titles and Fabinho, Shaqiri and Keita can provide that additional firepower.
‘[Adam] Lallana is also back. With one more centre-back, Liverpool can be a real force; I’d be looking at snatching Harry Maguire from under Manchester United’s noses.’
