According to the Mirror’s David Maddock, as cited by The Empire Of The Kop, Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is set to spend the season at Anfield after a move to Premier League newcomers Fulham fell through. The Belgian custodian found himself go down the pecking order after Jurgen Klopp selected Loris Karius over him to stand between the crossbars in the last season.
The Reds spent significantly this summer and have brought in Alisson Becker from AS Roma in a club record deal, which now pushes Karius to the second spot as well. The German goalkeeper had a nightmare of a match in last season’s Champions League final, where he fumbled on two occasions to help the Real Madrid strikers take the game away from the Reds.
The inclusion of Alisson has made the future of Mignolet even more uncertain at Anfield and a move to Fulham would have been an ideal escape for the Belgian ace. However, with that option going out of the window, it seems that the 30-year-old will have to stay with Liverpool for another season.
Liverpool second choice custodian Loris Karius has been linked with an exit this summer as well, with Besiktas being the interested party for the German. As per the reports, an agreement has been reached between the two clubs to send him to the Vodafone Arena with just a few days left for the closure of the transfer window, which indicates towards the fact that Mignolet will be staying back at the Merseyside club.
