According to reports in Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have identified Belgian forward Dries Mertens as a surprise transfer target this summer. Transfer Market Web claims that United manager Jose Mourinho, who has not been able to land Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic, is eyeing the 31-year-old as an alternative for the Croatian star.
It is being said that the player has a price tag of €40million put on him by the Serie A giants Napoli. Mertens was one of the mainstays for his national side in the FIFA World Cup as he has been for Napoli in the last two seasons, scoring 56 goals in total for them.
Though Perisic remains a primary transfer target for the Portuguese manager, United’s inability to land him this summer might make him turn attention towards the Belgian ace this summer. The Manchester United manager has cut a frustrated figure this summer due to the lack of transfer activity and the club’s inability to land the players of his preference.
The recent report of Bayern Munich defensive ace Jerome Boateng agreeing to personal terms with the French giants Paris Saint Germain is sure to make his mood sourer. The German international has been one of the primary targets for Mourinho this summer and United’s inability to land him is surely not going to go down well with him.
