Reports from French media indicates that Liverpool have failed even in their second attempt to land 19-year-old French defender Modibo Sagnan. The defender currently plies his trade for Ligue 2 outfit Lens. Many are still of the opinion that the Reds should go in and sign a centre-back, however, Jurgen Klopp has decided to not add any defenders in the transfer market.
One of the major reasons why the Reds faithful have been crying out for another defender is because of Joel Matip’s dubious injury record. He got injured in the preseason and is set to miss out on the first month of the Premier League action at least. With Dejan Lovren not yet back to full fitness, Liverpool went in with young Joe Gomez in their first game to partner alongside Virgil van Dijk.
The Merseyside club will be looking to end their trophy drought and having depth in the squad is as important as having a strong playing eleven. To challenge on all fronts and keep up with the opponents, it is necessary for the Reds to have backup options.
Sagnan signed his first professional contract last season only with Lens and he started in just 5 games for them throughout their campaign. It is clear that Liverpool are looking at him as a fallback option but it would be better if they go on to promote someone from their youth or reserve squad.

We saw Klopp use young 21-year-old Nathaniel Phillips in the centre back role in the preseasons and the defender did show some promise. Sagnan is yet to prove himself even at Lens and a move to the Premier League will be a big jump in quality for him.
