According to reports in Metro, Manchester United are set to offer Juan Mata a new contract which will keep him at the club until 2021. Once the player returns from preseason tour, United officials will sit him down and talk about a new contract. This will come as a surprise to many as quite a lot of people expected that the Spaniard would be sold in the summer having entered in the final year of his contract.
However, the Spaniard generated little interest in the transfer market even from Spain and that has made United reverse their stance on the attacking midfielder. The 30-year-old is one of few players in the United squad who has that creative side to his game and that could be one of the reasons why Jose Mourinho would want to keep him for few more years at the club.
Mata currently earns £150,000 a week and it will be interesting to see whether the United board will offer him an increase. The Spaniard had a poor campaign last season personally as he managed just 3 goals.
Mourinho was the one who had sold the Spaniard to Manchester United when he was managing Chelsea as the Portuguese manager was often unimpressed with his work rate and ability to contribute defensively in the side.
Though they are likely to give him a new contract, but the club will sell him if there is a good offer on the table for the midfielder. Many thought that the Spaniard will be completely sidelined once Mourinho came in to manage at Old Trafford but he has been a valuable squad player for the Red Devils as he played 40 games in all competitions last season. It remains to be seen whether he will be in plans of the manager in the upcoming season after a disappointing last campaign.
