According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has sent a message to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, having used Ander Herrera as a right-sided central defender in the back three formation he used against Tottenham Hotspur. The Red Devils went onto lose the match by 3-0 as their defences were torn down by Spurs in the second half after a resolute performance in the first half by Mourinho’s men.
The Manchester United manager was discontent about the fact that he could not get a world class centre back into his team this summer, which has been a failure for the club’s hierarchy as well. The sloppy errors from the United defence in the second half again exposed the evils of not having a quality player guarding their backline and Woodward should be, to some extent, blamed for the same.
Mourinho has not been able to deliver the expected results in his regime at the Old Trafford so far, which might see him put his job on the line of fire. The manager has reportedly been unhappy with the summer transfer business as the Red Devils only managed to get their hands on Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant, the first one being the only high profile player signing for them.

The Portuguese gaffer wanted any one of Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng and Harry Maguire to beef up his defence but Woodward could not fulfil his wish. As per the report, playing a seasoned midfielder like Ander Herrera in the backline, that too in the first big match of the season could be a discreet message to the hierarchy, especially Woodward, that it would be a wise thing to fulfil Mourinho’s demands, at least in terms of players.
