According to Goal.com, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has racked up more controversy by lauding the fans but not his squad. In the press conference ahead of their mega clash against Tottenham Hotspur, the Portuguese manager went onto voice his praise for the fans and said that they were “fantastic”.
Mourinho said, “The supporters were fantastic in both matches [against Leicester City and Brighton],” he added, “Not for me, for the team, which is the only thing that matters.
“In my career I was never selfish and thinking about myself, I was always a club man. That’s what I am. I am really happy when the supporters support the team.
“Against Leicester, you can say in a normal situation because the team was playing well and was winning. To be supportive of the team against Brighton, where we didn’t play well and lost the match, it gives you a fantastic feeling.”
However, the manager also went onto take a dig at his own players and said that they should honour the tremendous support of the fans. He said, “I hope that feeling, the players also feel it and the players are ready to give them everything they have.”
The Portuguese gaffer has not been happy with the club hierarchy who has not been able to get him the players he would have wanted to have in his squad this summer. Manchester United were not able to land a significant player in a defensive role, which has reportedly created a rift between the manager and the executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward at Old Trafford.
