Steven Gerrard has been after a left-footed centre-half for over a couple of months now, and so far he has had little success. While Rangers have been relentless in the pursuit of Millwall defender Jake Cooper (a left-footed centre-half), the Lions were resolute in their stance that they would not sell their star defender to the Scottish outfit. Now, it seems that Gerrard has zeroed in on who he wants to bring to the Ibrox, and the player is Bournemouth’s, Jack Simpson. According to the latest reports in Sky Sports, the loan deal of Simpson will go through the moment Nathan Ake’s fitness is assessed by the medical team of the Cherries (the injury is not thought to be too serious).
A Short Overview Of Jack Simpson
If you try searching about Jack Simpson over the internet, you will not find much. Yes, he potentially ticks a couple of boxes for Rangers given he is a left-footed centre-half as Gerrard has been looking for some time now and an exciting talent at 21 years. However, he does not seem to have much experience, featuring only four times last season after making his debut against Middlesbrough in the League Cup.
As such, real information about Simpson is scant and we have decided that the only way we can overcome this is by watching him in action. And we got lucky when Bournemouth faced Real Betis in action. While the Bournemouth team that lined up on the 3rd August was far from the first team, the only thing mattering to us was whether Jack Simson would start or not.
Guess what? We got lucky! Simpson lined up with Tyrone Mings in defence.
Jack Simpson in the match Vs Real Betis
First off, if you are one of the 99.9% who has not witnessed this match, consider yourself lucky. It was the definition of a snoozefest, but anyhow we digress. While the Cherries conceded two goals, neither of the goals were remotely Simpson’s fault. In fact, in a genuinely dull match, Simpson more than held his own. With a strong physique, he was clearing almost everything thrown at him aerially.
While he was tiring at the end (a clear indication of lack of match fitness), his commitment was there for everyone to see.
Why Does Gerrard Want Simpson At Rangers?
Honestly, if Simpson were not a left-footed centre-half, Gerrard would probably not have thought about bringing him to Ibrox. We are speculating here, but the defender looks far from a finished product. Yes, he has a good physique and is good at dominating in the air, but it would be tough to say anything more based on the match against Real Betis. Still incredibly green, this is a risk for Gerrard and his scouts here. Hopefully, Simpson would prove us all wrong and show what he is made of when he takes the field.
