Latest reports claim that Wolves are considering an official approach towards Swansea City for the services of Alfie Mawson. The Welsh outfit have already rejected a bid from West Ham United and have set an asking price of over £20m. The centre-back is being heavily rumoured to be on the move for better opportunities in the Premier League after his club were relegated last term.
Mawson had made 71 total appearances for the Swans, since making a permanent switch from Barnsley in the summer of 2016. The 24-year-old has gone through the roughs of various loan spells with clubs like Maidenhead United, Wycombe Wanderers, Luton Town and Welling United.
He was released from Reading FC youth academy when he was just 15 and was also rejected by Bournemouth and Millwall when on trial. Brentford gave him a chance on a 2-year scholarship in 2010 and the rest has turned out to be an inspiring story.
Mawson made his Bees senior team debut against Derby County in August 2013 but could not hold down a position in the starting XI. He showcased his defensive abilities during his 63 appearances for Barnsley and also delivered with 9 goals in League One, earning a move to the Liberty Stadium.
Now we are witnessing the 24-year-old’s name get talked around in the same breath as the ones in the England national team. Mawson has been capped 6 times for his country’s U21 side and was called up by Gareth Southgate for the 2018 FIFA World Cup warm-up matches against the Netherlands and Italy.
He scored his first international goal in the 2-1 win over Slovakia U21 side. Mawson has made a name for himself in the English top-flight by standing out in a relegation-riddled Swansea squad. He has a brilliant sense of judging opposition attack while staying disciplined at the back.
Following their exit from the Premier League, the Swans are expected to part ways with their high profile names and Mawson is at the very top of that list.
However, is the Wolves the right outfit for the influential defensive ace? Nuno Espirito Santo already has Ryan Bennett, Conor Coady, Willy Boly, Danny Batth and Kortney Hause in the squad.

Even with the Portuguese boss implementing a three-back formation, it is hard to fit so many figures into the squad on a regular basis. Mawson should only be considered if some of the aforementioned names quit the Molineux this summer, which looks unlikely at this time.
