According to Spanish news outlet, Mundo Deportivo, Wolves are supposedly keeping tabs on Barcelona midfielder, Andre Gomes. The 24-year-old is clearly unsettled in the Blaugrana ranks since making his switch from Valencia in the summer of 2016. Not only has the Portuguese failed to hold down to a spot in the Barca first team, he was also been dropped by Fernando Santos from the Portuguese national team that took part in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
This has led to plenty of speculations over Gomes’ future as Barcelona lines up other moves in search of more quality this summer. The central midfielder made his way over to the Camp Nou for a £29.3m transfer fee and has ever since been a sporadic option for the Catalans.
He was supposed to be a long-term successor of Sergio Busquets but in turn, forced Barcelona to find an alternative in Paulinho. The latter has impressed from the box-to-box role last season and is in a better position under Ernesto Valverde than Gomes.
The 24-year-old Portuguese ace has so far racked up 78 appearances for the La Liga champions during which he has registered just 3 goals and 4 assists. With his contract set to run for another three seasons, Gomes could be potentially worth a sizeable amount with interest rising from a number of European outfits.
However, what will Gomes be able to add to the Wolves squad in the upcoming season? Nuno Espirito Santo already made Ruben Neves’ arrival permanent from FC Porto and also has Romain Saiss in the club ranks.
Both Neves and Gomes play an identical game and together, they might not be the best fit at the same time on the pitch. While Santo clearly implements a two-man midfield with Neves taking over the creative reigns, he also requires a solid defensive anchor who will be able to secure the position.
Last season Alfred N’Diaye was his chosen man who worked well alongside Neves. Sure, the Premier League will have its fair share of challenges and the Wanderers still need to make a few good additions to keep on their ambitious path towards top-flight recognition.
Since N’Diaye has not been recalled on a permanent deal, maybe Santo is lining up a move for another prolific addition. He can use the Portuguese connection to get Gomes to the Molineux.
