Colombia’s World Cup star Yerry Mina could follow his countryman Davinson Sanchez’s footsteps as the 23-year-old is being linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur. However, Barcelona are only willing to let him go on a loan move. The Catalans feel the towering defender is surplus to requirements at Camp Nou as they have the likes of Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti at their disposal. They are currently said to be close to signing Sevilla‘s Clement Lenglet so that there could be more competition for places for the Colombian defender.
Mina had a good World Cup for his country and that has certainly enhanced his reputation further. Along with Spurs, Everton are also eyeing a loan move for the 6ft 4inches defender. The Colombian was crucial for his side defensively as well as in attack, especially in set-piece situations. He used his height to good effect as he managed 3 goals for Colombia in the tournament before they bowed out to England on penalties.
Spurs will be looking to improve themselves from the experiences of the last season. They are yet to end their trophy drought and Mauricio Pochettino will be aware that he needs to deliver something substantial to make this golden generation of Spurs count. Adding Mina to that squad will certainly bring in a lot of depth and strength to the side.
The Barcelona defender made just 6 appearances since his move in January and the player has been left frustrated at the club. It seems highly unlikely that Ernesto Valverde will prefer him over Pique or Umtiti so it is likely that he will be confined to the bench for the most part of next season as well. Sending him on loan won’t be a bad idea from Barcelona’s point of view but that could mean that they might loosen the grip on the player in the future.
Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld has been linked with a move away from the club for quite a while now so it is likely that the north London club will look to replace him in the transfer window. Mina can be a great prospect and he already has an understanding with their other centre-half Davinson Sanchez as they started together for their country in the World Cup.
Mina is just 23, so there is still a lot of unfulfilled potential in him. He needs to eradicate some defensive errors out of his game and given his size and physicality, he can be a dominant force for whichever team he plays for in the future including Spurs if they can get him on a season-long loan at White Hart Lane.
