Gelson Martins’ time at Sporting CP seems to be drawing to a conclusion as a fallout with the Sporting fans has led to him seeking a future away from the club.
Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool are said to be interested in signing the youngster. A staggering €60m was what Sporting CP are asking for their talented winger but being an unproven gem, that amount will most likely have to be lowered if Martins decides to push for a move away.
Leading the line to snap up the Portuguese sensation are Tottenham Hotspur who are looking to strengthen their squad before the upcoming campaign. Squad depth plays a factor in having a stable season for any team and Spurs would do well to snatch up the want-away star.
Towards the end of the last campaign, Sporting fan and players clashed horns due to the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League. 50 masked “fans” decided to take the clubs shortcomings into their own hands as they ambushed players and staff alike, back in May.
William Carvalho, Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Ribeiro, Daniel Podence and Bas Dost along with Gelson Martins all faced the wrath of their upset fans. The players are now looking to terminate their contract putting their safety first, which is understandable.
Gelson Martins’ agent has already made a public claim that his client would like to focus on his playing time and a move away from the Portuguese powerhouse is well on the cards. Agent Ulisses Santos went on to proceed on Facebook stating, “Being the agent of Gelson Martins, I have as a top priority his tranquillity, and maximum concentration to be able to do what he knows, professional football.”
Versatile and young, Gelson would definitely strengthen the Tottenham line up and could be deployed on either flank or as a right back. This would allow Pochettino to rest the likes of Dele Alli, Lucas Moura and even Kieran Trippier. He would fit into the current Spurs set-up well, as their 3-5-2 approach suits the youngster’s style of play.

Pace, strength and the ability to turn defenders’ heads is what Gelson brings to any team he plays for. He possesses a good eye for goal and is technically gifted. He has represented Portugal at various junior levels, the most impressive being his stint with the Portuguese under 19 team, where he capped 21 appearances with 7 goals. So it might be a move worth making for Mauricio Pochettino in the summer transfer market.
