Tottenham Hotspur have contacted VFL Stuttgart over the possibility of signing their French defender Benjamin Pavard this summer. According to recent reports, Spurs are hoping to secure the services of the French international during this summer transfer period. It is believed that the North Londoners are looking for a replacement for Toby Alderweireld, who is being heavily linked with Manchester United in recent weeks, and Pavard fits the bill perfectly.
The French defensive ace has put in a number of solid performances for the German club during the course of last season which has not gone unnoticed by Spurs. Some sources are now claiming that Mauricio Pochettino have identified the Stuttgart star to be an ideal fit for the club, especially after his recent heroics for the French national team in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Pavard scored one of the goals of the World Cup and caught the eye with his impressive displays at right-back while playing for his country. Although, he primarily plays as a centre-back for his club yet his versatility is also one of the key reasons why he will be a perfect fit for Pochettino’s Tottenham side.
The 22-year-old world champion had penned a new deal at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in December last year so Stuttgart will be under no pressure to sell. However, his contract contains a release clause of €35m (£30.9m) which is set to be activated in the summer of 2019.
In a recent interview, Stuttgart’s sporting director Michael Reschke revealed that the club has no intention of selling the player and was quoted to have said, “We make no secret of the fact that Benjamin has a release clause for 2019. We will gladly forgo a lot of money if he plays for us for a further season,”
The potential addition of Pavard will definitely bolster Pochettino’s defensive options at White Hart Lane. The North Londoners have some top quality defenders in their squad such as Davinson Sanchez, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Serge Aurier and Kieran Trippier who are all vying for a spot in Pochettino’s first XI. The acquisition of Pavard will improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within the Tottenham squad.

At 22, the World Cup winner has incredible potential which he can fulfil at North London if given the chance to prove his worth in the top tier of English football. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Pavard and whether he ends up making a switch to White Hart Lane this summer in search of more challenging adventures.
