In the last two seasons, Sunderland first finished at the bottom of the top flight league table and then last season, they failed to get out of the 24th spot in the Championship table, leaving them to play in League One next season.
Currently, under Jack Ross, the Black Cats are in desperate need to start finding some consistency and will believe that they can start their ascent in the English tiers this summer. They have already allowed a few players to leave this summer, making space for players who can make an impact next season. One such player they are now set to sign is Liam Millar.
Born and brought up in Ontario, the Canadian youngster first moved to England with Fulham’s academy in 2013. He joined Liverpool in 2016 and has ever since earned a reputation as a star for the future.
He made an immediate impact on the U23s, scoring a hat-trick on his debut for the club in 2016. Just months later, he was offered his first professional contract on his 17th birthday and is now regarded as one of the most exciting prospects at the club’s academy.
He did not disappoint last season and scored 19 goals for the U18 and the U19 sides, standing as the top goal scorer in the academy. He can play on either wing or through the middle, has already broken into the Canadian national side but is still 18, and learning the game.
Millar has stood up to every challenge he has faced so far at Anfield and is exactly the kind of a player Klopp loves to introduce to the first team. However, the teenager has very little experience at the highest level and it might be time for him to move out on loan, in search of game time.
He is still 18 and can learn a lot playing at Liverpool’s academy but reports suggest that Sunderland are now prepared to take him to League One. Elliott Dickman’s U23 squad at Stadium of Light has seen the additions of Jack Bainbridge and Jordan Hunter and it is understood that Liam Millar might be the next arrival at Academy of Light.

He has immense potential but needs to start playing regularly to gain some exposure and he will do so at Sunderland. Jack Ross will keep a keen eye on the progress of such youngster and could use a few of them in League One next season, giving them a chance to prove themselves. He may have a future at Liverpool but not an immediate one so a move to Tyneside is probably for the best of all involved.
