Marco Silva, in his first summer transfer window at Everton, is desperate to lower the age profile of the squad at Goodison Park. He is looking to add quality to certain areas of the squad but the left-back role is something that has constantly frustrated him this summer.
With Leighton Baines turning 33 already and Cuco Martina not showing enough promise, Silva has been on an extensive search of a left-back for weeks now. He has failed in his negotiations to land Celtic star Kieran Tierney while Lazio’s Jordan Lukaku and Barcelona’s Lucas Digne are also on his radar.
But one such name that has now rejected a move to Merseyside is English full-back, Luke Shaw.
The most expensive full-back in the game at the moment, Shaw cost Manchester United £30m when he moved to Old Trafford in 2014. He was expected to be the first choice at the club for years to come but he failed to impress Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho and is still struggling to establish himself in the first team.
The 23-year old still has the potential to be a star as his technical prowess and the maturity in his game make him a real asset on the wing. He can put in some delicious crosses and is equally adept at soaking up pressure down his wing. However, he lacks consistency and has often been criticized by Mourinho at United but at his age, he can still be a match winner for the Red Devils.
With Daley Blind set to quit United, Mourinho needs Shaw or a replacement this summer so the full-back does not need to rush to make a decision. The likes of Alex Sandro are on Mourinho’s radar but reports now suggest that Shaw is happy to stay at Old Trafford and fight for a place in the first team.
The same story claims that Shaw, who has just a year left on his current deal with United, is happy to run it down and assess his options as a free agent next summer, deciding to reject any advances from Everton. It does leave the Toffees with some work in the transfer window but should Shaw have made the move?

He can learn under Baines for a year and will reduce pressure on him at Goodison Park. He may rule on his future at the end of the next season but if he struggled again at Old Trafford, he will definitely rue this chance of joining the Toffees. Do you think Shaw is right in running his United contract down?
