According to reports in the Mirror, Southampton are one of the teams who are interested in bringing Danny Drinkwater on loan. The midfielder has failed to establish himself at Chelsea after his big money move from Leicester City and many expect him to part ways with the club in the summer.
The Saints will definitely be looking to improve from last season’s performance as they came in touching distance of getting relegated. Their crucial win against Swansea City in the latter half of the season saw them survive by the skin of their teeth. Mark Hughes will have a big job on his hand as he will try to make sure that the Saints don’t suffer another relegation scare.
Drinkwater was a crucial player for the Foxes in the season when they did the unthinkable by winning the Premier League. However, ever since his move to Stamford Bridge, he has struggled to get any kind of game time at the club and with the new manager Maurizio Sarri bringing in Jorginho, the Englishman’s game time is set to reduce further.
The 28-year-old made just 12 appearances in the Premier League even though the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Tiemoue Bakayoko were struggling for the Blues.
After an impressive loan spell, even Ruben Loftus Cheek will have a say in the midfield position and Drinkwater should definitely press for a move away from the club if he doesn’t want to settle for a place on the bench throughout the next season. A player like him will definitely add a lot of value for the Saints.
Hughes has already signed a central midfielder in Stuart Armstrong from Celtic, however, given the current options which the club has at its disposal, Drinkwater will be an upgrade on most of them. The 28-year-old is known for his tenacity in the middle of the park as he is extremely hard working and moves the ball well. He has an eye to pick out his teammates and if allowed to play in a more free-flowing role, can influence the play more on the attacking front.

The pressure will definitely mount on Hughes if the club doesn’t start well in the new campaign. No one expected the Saints to fight a relegation battle and they will be expected to pull up their socks for the upcoming season. Having the experienced Drinkwater in midfield will certainly help their chances for a better place finish than last season.
