Spanish international Marco Asensio was recently being linked with a move away from Santiago Bernabeu and it was speculated that Liverpool have an eye on him. However, his agent recently made it clear that his client will not leave Real Madrid. The 22-year-old is touted as the next big thing in European football and it would have been a disaster if the Galacticos would have let him go when he still has so much unfulfilled potential.
His agent was quoted as saying,”Marco won’t move, he’ll stay with Real Madrid. He’s improving all the time. Next season I think he’ll be very important in Madrid.” Asensio has slowly broken into the first team and has established himself as an integral member of the squad. With Cristiano Ronaldo leaving, Madrid cannot have another of their attacking talent leave the club in the same transfer window.
He had made 53 appearances in all competitions last season and managed 11 goals. More often than not, he had to be content with playing as a substitute. However, under the former Spain manager Julen Lopetegui, we can expect him to get a good run of games in the first eleven.
With an opportunity to become a star and lead the attack for Real Madrid, a move to Liverpool would have been a step downwards in his career.
The Reds might have offered him much more regular game time, but now it seems that won’t be an issue at Real Madrid as well. Jurgen Klopp is close to building something special at Liverpool as they have been playing attractive football and came perilously close to winning the Champions League last season.
Klopp will be aware that he will need to deliver something substantial at the club otherwise the Reds will again run the risk of losing their star players in the future. Signing Asensio would have made them genuine title contenders, however, now with him staying back at the Spanish capital, they need to look at other alternatives in the transfer market.

Liverpool are yet to fill the gap that Philippe Coutinho left at the club and currently they need a creative player in midfield, more than a winger. So maybe signing Asensio isn’t the topmost priority for the club as Klopp has decided not to pursue the player further. The addition of an attacker like Asensio would have undoubtedly enriched Klopp’s squad for the next term but he is already well stacked in that area and the 22-year-old Spanish ace would have been nothing more than an unnecessary inclusion when Liverpool already have other holes to plug in their squad.
