Rangers are looking to send their midfielder Greg Docherty out on loan before the end of this transfer window. According to recent reports, the Scottish midfielder is not a part of Steven Gerrard’s plans for the new season which could pave the way for his move out of the Ibrox Stadium on a temporary basis during this summer transfer period.
Some sources are now claiming that the Gers youngster could head out on loan in the coming weeks with a number of British clubs being made aware of his availability. The 21-year-old signed for the Teddy Bears from Hamilton at the start of this year and has featured in 14 matches for the Gers first-team so far. However, he was an unused substitute in Rangers’ goalless stalemate with Shkupi earlier this week which is another indication that he is not ready for first-team action at the moment.
Docherty penned a four-and-half-year contract in January for a fee believed to be in the region of £600,000. It has been suggested that Gerrard wants to send him out on loan this summer so that he can continue with his development and come back as a better player, capable of challenging for a place in Gerrard’s senior squad.
It is expected that there would be no shortage of interest in the player’s services but the fact that the Gers boss is willing to let him depart for the short-term is a clear indication of Gerrard’s goal to revamp his squad and trim the fat going into the new campaign.
Rangers have managed to start their season off on a positive note but Gerrard will be aware that he needs to make a few more adjustments to his squad in the coming weeks before the transfer window draws to a close.
The temporary departure of Docherty won’t have an effect on Gerrard’s first-team going into the new season as the Light Blues look to close the gap between themselves and their rivals at the top of the Scottish top-flight. The English manager can use the cap space generated by the departure of the 21-year-old midfielder to strengthen other areas of his squad.

It will also benefit Docherty to gain some much needed first-team experience away from the Ibrox Stadium next term. At 21, he still has a lot of time to develop and take his game to the next level. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Docherty and whether his time away from the Gers turns out to be productive.
