Rangers are set to bag a sizable cash windfall of up to £800,000 if Ipswich Town forward Martyn Waghorn joins Derby County this summer. The Teddy Bears sanctioned a cut-price £250,000 deal to sell the striker so that he could complete a switch to Ipswich Town just a year ago. According to recent reports, the English frontman has handed in an official transfer request in order to force through a move to Pride Park during this summer transfer period.
Some sources have recently claimed that Derby boss Frank Lampard is willing to pay a total fee which could rise to £8m. It has now been revealed that the Gers parted ways with Waghorn on a cut-price deal last summer but they also managed to insert a 10 per cent sell-on clause when he completed his switch to Portman Road.
Hence, if the transfer goes through in the coming weeks, Steven Gerrard’s side could earn up to £800,000 which they can use to bring Jake Cooper to the Ibrox Stadium. The Light Blues have been linked with the Millwall defender in recent times but a move has failed to materialise so far.
Gerrard needs to go all out with another fresh bid for the English centre-back if he wants to land him before the closure of this transfer window next month. He is exactly the kind of talent who can thrive under the guidance of the new Gers manager if given the opportunity to play regular football at the Ibrox next term.
The Glaswegian heavyweights had a forgetful campaign last term but the arrival of Gerrard as their new manager earlier this summer has raised the spirits of their loyal fans. Gerrard should now look to finalise his squad and close the gap to their crosstown rivals, Celtic, in the upcoming campaign.
The addition of Cooper will definitely bolster Gerrard’s defensive options ahead of the new campaign. The Teddy Bears have some promising talents in their ranks such as Connor Goldson, Nikola Katić and Kyle Bradley vying for a centre-back berth in Gerrard’s starting XI. The potential acquisition of Cooper will undoubtedly improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within the Light Blues squad.

At 23, the English prospect has his prime years ahead of him which the Gers could look to benefit from, in the new few seasons. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Cooper and whether he ends up playing at the Ibrox Stadium before the start of the new season.
