Rangers centre-back Bruno Alves is closing in on a switch to Parma this summer. According to recent reports, the Gers talent is all set for a move to the Serie A during this summer transfer window after agreeing on a one-year deal. It is believed that the deal could go through as early as today with the defender flying to Italy to complete his medical.
The 36-year-old joined the Ibrox outfit from Cagliari last summer. However, his time with the Teddy Bears has been plagued with injuries which had initially thrown his future in doubt. The new Rangers boss Steven Gerrard had disclosed last week that he will only decide on the future of the Portuguese international after the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He was quoted to have said, “I haven’t spoken to Bruno yet.
“I have given him the respect he deserves as he has got very important things to focus on right now in terms of the World Cup. That should be his priority.
“He will have a break after Portugal either win the tournament or get knocked out and then I will have a conversation with Bruno.”
However, things have developed on a rapid rate after Portugal’s elimination in the knockout phases of the World Cup and now, the Portuguese centre-back is expected to seal a move to Italy soon.
With Alves all set to depart the Glaswegian club in the near future, let’s take a look at three alternative options for the Gers to consider in this post-season.
Ahmed Hegazi
The West Bromwich Albion centre-back has put in some impressive performances at the Hawthorns during the course of last season. The Gers can offer him regular first-team football at the Ibrox Stadium after Alves’ departure this summer, which might be enough to convince him to join Steven Gerrard’s revolution at the Glaswegian club.
The Egyptian international has a lot of experience at the highest level having played a full season in the English top-flight while also featuring for his country in the 2018 FIFA World Cup which makes him a perfect fit for Rangers.
David Abraham
The Argentine defensive ace was a rock at the backline for Eintracht Frankfurt last season and his solid displays have helped his side achieve a top half finish in the Bundesliga rankings. The main reason for the German side’s recent success was primarily down to Abraham’s defensive contributions.
The 31-year-old centre-back had made 30 appearances for Frankfurt in all competitions last season and will be a great fit for Rangers as they look to improve on their league performance next term.
Ben Mee
The Burnley centre-back was a rock at the back for Sean Dyche’s Clarets during the course of the last campaign. He will be an ideal replacement for Alves and could turn out to a shrewd signing if the Gers can pull off such a deal. The 28-year-old had featured in 30 matches for the Clarets last season and has been a key figure in his side’s climb to the top half of the league rankings.
