Rangers are currently leading the chase to sign Bournemouth forward Jermain Defoe this summer. According to recent reports, the Gers are the favourites to land the Cherries frontman during this summer transfer period. It is understood that the Glaswegian giants are in pole position to secure the services of the talented Englishman, who is back attending pre-season training under Eddie Howe.
Defoe was a sporadic feature for the Cherries and had only managed to feature in 11 league matches for his club last season. Some of the United Kingdom bookmakers are now listing them as the favourites to sign the 35-year-old veteran this summer. The Teddy Bears has been priced at 3/1 to seal a move for Defoe while Leeds United and Nottingham Forest are rated at 10/1.
The former England international could benefit from a move to the Ibrox Stadium as he will feature more regularly under Steven Gerrard. Defoe needs to play week in week out as he heads into the twilight years of his career so a potential switch up north of the border could be on the cards.
However, the Cherries would then need to find a worthy replacement to fill up the hole in their squad left by the Englishman’s departure. There is no doubt that the 35-year-old is a great squad player for any team but the fact that he can be a regular first-team player under Gerrard at the Ibrox should be incentive enough to lure him to Glasgow.
The Gers of Scotland had a poor season last term but the appointment of Gerrard this summer as their new manager has raised the spirits of their loyal supporters. The Glaswegian outfit will now need to make some quality acquisitions to their squad if they are serious about closing the gap to their derby rivals, Celtic, next term.
The addition of Defoe will definitely bolster Gerrard’s attacking options ahead of the new campaign. The Teddy Bears have some promising attacking talents in their ranks such as Alfredo Morelos, Daniel Candeias and Eduardo Herrera vying for a starting berth in Gerrard’s first XI. The potential acquisition of Defoe will undoubtedly improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within the Rangers squad.

The Bournemouth goal-getter will benefit from a switch to the Ibrox Stadium as he can flourish under the guidance of Gerrard which might help him end his career on a high in Scottish football. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Defoe and whether he ends up plying his trade in Glasgow before the start of the new season.
