Rangers have been relatively active in the transfer market as they have made some good signings in the summer transfer window. They are now eyeing a swoop for former Newcastle United winger Alex Gilliead. The player has represented England at various youth levels and the 22-year-old has been with the Magpies since 2012.
His contract expired last month and the player is set to be a free agent. The player’s contract talks with the club didn’t reach a fruitful conclusion and the Magpies will be mulling to see him go away for free. The player had loan spells with various clubs in the last few years, however, he didn’t look like breaking into Newcastle’s senior team. Last season he spent on loan with Bradford City, making 48 appearances in all competitions and managed a partial return of 2 goals and 2 assists.
Gilliead is now a free agent and as a result, quite a few Championship and League One clubs are after him along with Rangers. The winger recently talked about his future plans and said,”It will be a new chapter in my career. I have been at Newcastle for six or seven years now, so it’s quite a long time. It hasn’t worked out the way I wanted it to. But these things happen and you just have to try to find your best option after that.”
Meanwhile, Rangers saw their derby rivals Celtic dominate Scottish football yet again as they wrapped up a historic ‘double treble’. The Gers have taken a huge punt by appointing an inexperienced manager in Steven Gerrard but he has filled the club with a lot of positivity. His approach in the transfer market is also being applauded as the Ibrox based club has made some shrewd signings as of now.
Gilliead could again be another one for them as he won’t cost a penny for the Teddy Bears. The player has shown a lot of promise at the youth level while playing for England which made quite a few pundits and coaches tout him as a future England international. However, his career graph hasn’t gone as expected as he has been plying his trade in lower divisions for the past few years.
