Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Deportivo La Coruna centre-back Fabian Schar this summer. It is understood that the club has activated the £3m release clause in the Swiss international’s contract and has finalised his transfer during this summer transfer period. It was earlier reported that the Swiss defensive ace was on Newcastle’s radar and the Tynesiders have now confirmed that he has completed his transfer.
Some sources had recently claimed that the Swiss talent underwent a medical at Tyneside on Wednesday ahead of a £3m transfer from Deportivo. Rafael Benitez was on the lookout for a new central defender following Chancel Mbemba’s exit in favour of a £7m move to FC Porto earlier this month. The Magpies boss has identified Schar as an ideal option to take up the defensive duties at St. James’ Park ahead of the new season.
Rafa was eager to bring in a new defender before the transfer window slams shut next month and Schar fits the bill perfectly as the 26-year-old is exactly the type of player who can thrive under the guidance of Benitez if given the chance to play regular football at St. James’ Park in the upcoming campaign. Schar is vastly experienced having played in Turkey, Germany and Spain during his career so far which makes him a perfect fit for the Tyneside club.
Newcastle had to endure a long and hard-fought domestic campaign under Benitez the last term but they still managed to claim a strong 10th placed finish in the top tier of English football. However, the Magpies will now be expected to push on and challenge for a European place in the following campaign but it would be a tough ask considering the financial constraints that the club is facing right now.
The acquisition of Schar will definitely improve Benitez’s defensive options at Tyneside. The Toon have an array of defensive talents such as Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark and Florian Lejeune who are all vying for a place in Benitez’s starting XI. The addition of Schar will undoubtedly bolster their team significantly and add more competition for places within the Magpies squad.

At 26, the Swiss prospect still has his best years ahead of him which Newcastle could look to capitalise on, in the next few campaigns. Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Schar and whether his time at St. James’ Park turns out to be a success.
