Manchester United endured a trophyless season under Jose Mourinho last time around and the Portuguese manager seems desperate to make sure that his side can compete for silverware on all four fronts next season. This has seen the manager spend big on a couple of additions already this summer but there are particular areas in the squad that the manager wants to upgrade this summer.
Mourinho spent on Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof in the last two summers and also has Phil Jones and Chris Smalling as options for two centre-back roles in the senior side. However, none of those names have filled the manager with confidence, as he is yet again in the transfer market this summer, searching for a defender.
He had been linked with the likes of Clement Lenglet, Samuel Umtiti and Toby Alderweireld in the past but reports now suggest that the Red Devils have made an enquiry about the availability of Leicester City star Harry Maguire.
Born and brought up in Sheffield, Maguire was relegated the season before the last with Hull City, even as he was one of the most consistent players for the Tigers that season. However, he stayed back in the Premier League, completing a £17m move to Leicester City last summer and just a year later, he was named the Player of the Year for the Foxes.
He also broke into Gareth Southgate’s national side and was crucial to England’s run to the semi-finals of the FIFA competition, as Maguire put in a number of memorable performances, instantly increasing his stock.
He now stands as one of the best defenders in the country and his calm approach and technical ability with the ball at his feet has attracted the best of the managers in the league. He is strong in the air and is hard to match at both ends of the field and has already received rave reviews for Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho in the past.
And reports now suggest that Manchester United values the player at around £65m. Leicester City wants to keep him at the King Power for another campaign and are ready to make him the highest paid player at the club, but a chance to play in a Red Devils shirt might be too big an opportunity for Maguire to ignore.

While the £65m price is inflated by his World Cup performances; at just 25, he is a long-term option and is definitely a player who will improve the squad at Old Trafford.
