Manchester United have been handed a boost in their chase for the Celtic fullback, Kieran Tierney. As per reports, Everton have dropped out of the race after hearing the Hoops’ £25m asking price and are currently looking into alternate options. This gives the Red Devils one less factor to worry about and also take an open shot at one of Scottish Premiership’s best players for a seemingly affordable rate.
Tierney has recently agreed to a new six-year contract extension and has grown up to be a loyal fan of the club. He passed out of the Celtic youth ranks with distinction and is now on the verge of becoming the most expensive player in the Scottish top-flight.
He could be the long-term answer for United in the left-back position. Mourinho has been forced to convert Ashley Young into the position after his registered options failed to impress. Luke Shaw’s recovery from injury has been filled with recurring stretches on the sidelines. Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind were not even considered by the Portuguese tactician in the last term and is expected to be sold off this very summer.
The youngster, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson also struck out during his loan spell away with Leeds United. With Danny Rose also being dropped to the second string for the England national team, maybe Mourinho should now consider making an official approach for Tierney.
The youngster was instrumental in Celtic’s consecutive treble winning seasons. Not only did he fulfill his duties on the defensive end of the pitch, he also managed to showcase his exceptional abilities in the attack.
Tierney’s abilities lie well beyond his early years which could also lead him to become one of the legendary figures in the Scottish national team. He has the pace to go along with his 5 feet 10-inch stature and is technically superior to many top-flight midfielders.
Just like any other modern fullback, making overlapping runs and drilling in appetizing balls is almost second nature to him. Still only 21, Tierney has the years in front of him to learn the tricks of the English game and there is no telling as to what he could achieve if he makes the switch to Old Trafford.
Mourinho has already brought in Diogo Dalot from FC Porto this summer, who can serve as a defensive cover from either flank. However, with his dominant right foot, he is expected to succeed Antonio Valencia on the right, leaving the left side to be taken over by someone as exuberant and talented as Tierney.
