Manchester United are set to reignite their interest on AC Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci ahead of a potential move this summer. According to recent reports, the Red Devils are not willing to give up on the Italian centre-back and could make another attempt to bring him to Old Trafford during this summer transfer period.
However, some sources have recently claimed that Paris Saint-Germain are currently in pole position to land the Italian international in this post-season. The 31-year-old has to endure a difficult year at the San Siro but had still managed to put in some solid performances for the Serie A giants during the course of last season which has not gone unnoticed by other clubs.
In a recent interview, Italian football expert David Amoyal weighed in on Bonucci’s next destination and was quoted to have said, “United could certainly afford him, but I think PSG could make a strong push.
“We know Bonucci wanted to stay in Italy for family reasons (last summer). Manchester isn’t that much further than Paris, but there’s a long tradition of Italian and Serie A players being there (in Paris).
“If Bonucci is sold, I would probably say PSG but let’s see if it happens. I think a lot of it would have to do if Bonucci is prepared to move his family or not.”
The 31-year-old had featured in 51 matches for AC Milan last season and has 2 goals and one assist to his name in all competitions. There is no doubt about the centre-back’s quality but his form at the San Siro last season had taken a significant dip which will be a cause for concern. The Serie A sensation has also earned 80 international caps for the Italian national team during his career and is vastly experienced at the top level which makes him an ideal transfer target for Jose Mourinho.
The Reds of Manchester finished their campaign as the runners-up in the English top-flight but had another season without any silverware which will be a cause for concern for the 13-time champions of England. Hence, the Special One should look to acquire some top-class players this summer if his side are to challenge for major trophies in the upcoming campaign.
The addition of Bonucci would have undoubtedly bolstered Mourinho’s defensive options ahead of the new season. The Red Devils have an array of talented defenders such as Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Daley Blind, Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo competing for a place in Mourinho’s first XI. The potential acquisition of a top-class centre-back like Bonucci will definitely improve their team significantly and add more competition for places within the United squad.

The Italian is aerially dominant and can still perform at a top level for the next few years. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of the Italian international and whether United will still come back in with a bid for him this summer.
