After an impressive run to the Champions League final last season, Liverpool have made a fast start to their transfer window. Jurgen Klopp seems determined to land some silverware next season and is ready to add more quality to an impressive squad at Anfield.
However, such additions will mean reduced chances for academy products, who are ready for first-team action. One such player, now wanted by Norwich City is Ben Woodburn.
The youngest goalscorer ever for Liverpool, with his goal against Leeds at the end of 2016, Woodburn has slowly emerged as a household name all around Wales. He scored a winner against Austria on his debut for the senior side in World Cup qualifiers last year, truly announcing himself to the game.
At just 18, the Welsh attacker is one of the most talented youngsters currently at the Liverpool academy. He made five league appearances the season before the last, and it looked like he will make an impact on the first team at Anfield last season but Woodburn saw just six minutes of league action all season and will now be worried about game time.
He is currently a part of Klopp’s pre-season team and reports suggest that the German tactician will not take a decision on his future until the end of the tour. However, that has not stopped the likes of Norwich City and Sheffield United to enquire about his services on a loan deal.
A gifted footballer with a keen eye for a goal, Woodburn is an excellent dribbler with a great understanding of the game. He has superb skills and is a hard man to mark, as he constantly draws fouls, frustrating the opponents. He is technically perfect and is capable of producing spell-binding moments and at just 18, is a prospective star for Liverpool.
He will only be available on loan, that too if Klopp does not need him in his squad. But even then, Liverpool will need assurances of first team experience to send him to any club. Norwich City will have to make sure that they are ready to integrate Woodburn in their first team and if they cannot, Liverpool should not have a problem retaining the teenager for another year.
He is still 18 and will learn a lot, training with the Liverpool senior team. He may struggle for game time at Anfield but will have regular outings for the junior sides, that will keep him in shape. With Klopp as his mentor on a regular basis, he will be ready for first team action quicker than if he is sent on loan.
