Fulham have received a major boost as their club captain Tom Cairney has signed a long-term contract at Craven Cottage and is set to stay at the club for the next five years. Cairney scored the most important goal of the last season for the Lilywhites in the form of the winner against Aston Villa in the playoff finals which opened his team’s door to the Premier League.
He expressed his happiness by saying,” I’m obviously delighted to extend my contract, it’s all I’ve wanted to do, and I’m just buzzing to get the season underway. Premier League football is back at the Cottage, and it’s great to be part of the squad that got us there again.”
Securing the 27-year-old midfielder’s future will certainly help Slavisa Jokanovic’s plan for the upcoming season. The player was being linked with a move to West Ham United and it was believed that the Hammers even launched an official bid for the player. However, the Cottagers stuck to their guns as they turned down a £20m bid for their club captain.
Their Serbian manager will know that staying in the Premier League will be no piece of cake and he will require every player to be at their best if they want to establish themselves as a regular top-flight club.
The Scotsman joined the Cottagers in 2015 and have slowly gone on to become an important player for them in the past few years. Cairney has a little bit of experience of the Premier League as well as he played 11 games for Hull City when they were in the English top flight. The player has come a long way since then and is now one of the most crucial players in Jokanovic’s setup.
Cairney is often calm and composed on the ball and his work rate is also top notch. He has the habit of finding his teammates in good position and can also contribute with goals for his side. His goal which sent them to the Premier League is a testimony to that as he finished well to beat Villa’s onrushing Sam Johnstone.

The Cottagers will need to add more depth to their squad as they look to continue their rise in English football. Cairney, apart from being a top player, is a strong cohesive force in the side and that is why he has the captain’s armband. Securing his future for a long time is certainly a step in the right direction for the Cottagers.
