Everton are reportedly preparing a £25m bid for the Celtic fullback and Scotland international, Kieran Tierney. The 20-year-old is still at the very top of their shortlist for a Leighton Baines successor but have not approached Brendan Rodgers just yet. The Hoops boss still remains hopeful of keeping his star defender in the Celtic ranks for the upcoming season.
Tierney made a dodgy error in the warm-up game against Bohemians which led to his team losing. While addressing the situation, Rodgers said, “He is very committed and nothing changes. He is a good boy and I had a long chat with him just about keeping his focus really. These things you can’t control.”
While a single error in an inconsequential game is not the ideal platform to base a transfer rumour upon, it is hard to predict the outcome of a £25m transfer. For instance, it will shatter the transfer record of any club in the Scottish Premiership.
It will also place the Bhoys in a very difficult spot ahead of the 2018/19 season. Tierney tapered off transfer rumours last October by signing a long-term contract, set to run till the summer of 2023. The youngster agreed to stay with the side he grew up supporting and thus winning the faith of his own manager and the fans. Celtic are expected to hesitate since they will never be short of offers until the very end of the player’s contract.
With Rodgers holding his ground, it would not be the worst thing for Marco Silva to look into alternate options. Here are a few he should consider.
Danny Rose
Tottenham Hotspur’s unsettled man who has been battling with depression in recent times has long been linked with a move out of the club. With Manchester United signing Diogo Dalot a few short weeks back, it can be assumed that Everton have a fair shot at signing him, given their very own financial pedigree.
Ben Davies has stolen Rose’s spot in Spurs squad and it is unlikely that the Englishman would continue in the similar role next season.
Marvin Plattenhardt
The German left-back who was selected in Joachim Low’s squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup is earning a lot of plaudits for his performances in recent times. Hertha Berlin might agree to sell him off if Everton come up with a convincing bid.
