Mason Holgate is definitely one for the future. The quality he possesses within his football boots is something Everton and Marco Silva must appreciate and they should do all that is necessary to tie down the youngster to a new long-term contract.
Mason started his career with Barnsley where he was part of their youth set-up, since joining in 2005. His hard work paid off and in 2014, he made his senior debut for the Tykes. He spent the 2014-2015 campaign making 20 appearances. He also got a solitary goal under his belt during his one year for the senior team.
The following season, Holgate signed for Everton on a five-year deal. A year later, after a lot of hard work and patience, Holgate was given his chance to debut for the Toffees. He has not looked back since and has put in a string of impressive performances considering his tender age. He is slowly but surely, growing into the demands of the Premier League.
Holgate’s rise to prominence came to light last season when his performance in the Everton backline drew many admirers. His versatility saw him play either as a centre back or as a right back.
Marco Silva should have assessed the 21-year-old and it is seen as a good decision to hold on to the fiery youngster. To focus solely on improving his game and accumulating more game time should always be present in the mind of the young Englishman.
As most newcomers do, Holgate, at times, has let his emotions get the better of him. A classic example of this was seen last season when Liverpool hosted Everton during an FA Cup third round clash at Anfield. Holgate and Roberto Firmino were caught squaring up to each other as the latter was accused of using racial slurs towards Holgate. Firmino, however, denied the claims.
Marco Silva will have to eventually sit the hothead down and explain to him that altercations happen, more often than not, and that Holgate must focus his mind towards playing the game with the right spirit and correct mentality.
A senior call-up to the England team is very much on the cards for Holgate. The England head coach Gareth Southgate must definitely have one eye on Holgate’s development because his talent and presence in the England squad would do his side a world of good.
