Everton are looking for a new beginning under Marco Silva as the club tries to establish itself amongst the big boys of the Premier League. Under the ownership of Farhad Moshiri, the club has shown ambition in the transfer market, however, that wasn’t replicated on the pitch last season as the Toffees finished 8th. Given the circumstances in which Sam Allardyce took over, one can say that was a decent finish, however, he was shown the door from the club.
It’s believed that Marco Silva is set to deploy the system of three at the back in the upcoming season and they are in the market to sign a centre back. Latest reports suggest that director of football at Everton, Marcel Brands, has flown to Barcelona to negotiate a deal regarding the sale of Yerry Mina. It now seems that has borne fruit as fresh reports suggest that Everton are on the verge of landing the man with a £27m offer.
The big Colombian centre-half was one of the standout players for his country in the World Cup and that has attracted a lot of interest for the young defender. Ever since his move to La Liga, he has struggled to get game time as Ernesto Valverde has stuck to his favourite centre-back pairing of Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti. It seems unlikely that even in the upcoming season the Colombian will get regular opportunities and in just six months, the player has been left frustrated at Camp Nou as he made just 5 appearances in the La Liga.
Last season, the Merseyside club used the centre back pairing of Phil Jagielka and Michael Keane for the most part of the season. However, Jagielka is on the wrong side of the thirties and he won’t be expected to start week in week out for his side. Ramiro Funes Mori has already parted ways with the club and Ashley Williams has expressed his frustration regarding his unfruitful spell at the Goodison.
Given the situation, maybe, Silva will have to bring in two centre-halves this summer. Mina has definitely shown a lot of promise, however, the Premier League will definitely be a big test for him. He has the physicality and stature to succeed as a defender in English top flight football and from the pieces of evidence he had shown in the World Cup, he looks like a decent bet.

It will be interesting to see whether the La Liga holders will let him leave after signing him in the January transfer window this year. He is still 23 so reason dictates that Catalonian giants should try to hold on to him. However, recent events suggest otherwise.
