Everton are plotting a move for RCD Espanyol centre-back David Lopez this summer. According to recent reports, the Toffees are interested in securing the services of the Spanish defender during this summer transfer period. It is understood that the Merseyside outfit are looking to reignite their interest on the La Liga defensive ace, who was also linked with a move to Goodison Park back in January.
However, Marco Silva’s side are not the only ones looking to recruit the Spanish sensation and will face stiff competition from Real Betis and Valencia in pursuit of the player’s signature in this post-season. Lopez had a terrific campaign last term when he had put in a number of commanding displays at the Mestalla Stadium during the course of the last season which has not gone unnoticed by other clubs.
The former SD Huesca player is quite versatile and can operate in a number of different positions across the pitch. The 28-year-old primarily plays as a centre-back but also be deployed in central midfield which makes him a perfect fit for any of his potential suitors.
He is exactly the kind of defender who can thrive under the masterful guidance of Marco Silva at Goodison Park if given the opportunity to showcase his skills in the English top-flight. Lopez had featured in 43 matches for RCD Espanyol last season and has one goal and one assist to his name in all competitions.
The Merseyside outfit had a mediocre season last term as they could only manage to finish in the 8th place of the English top tier. Marco Silva’s squad needs some injection of quality during this ongoing transfer window if the Toffees are to progress and clinch a European place next term.
The potential acquisition of Lopez will undoubtedly bolster Silva’s defensive options at Goodison Park. Everton have an array of defenders which include Ashley Williams, Phil Jagielka, Mason Holgate and Michael Keane competing for a place at the heart of Silva’s backline. The addition of Lopez will add more competition for places within the Toffees squad and improve their team significantly going into the new season as they look to bridge the gap to the Premier League‘s Top 6.

At 28, the Spaniard is at his prime and will be an ideal asset for the Merseyside club as they look to improve on their league performance in the upcoming campaign. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Lopez and whether Silva’s side are successful in convincing him to make a switch to Merseyside this summer.
