Everton are looking to secure the services of Barcelona centre-back Yerry Mina this summer. According to recent reports, the Toffees have already made contact with Barca over the possibility of signing the Colombian international during this summer transfer period. The 23-year-old was Colombia’s best player in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and his three goals in three matches helped his side reach the knockout phases of the competition where they eventually ended up being eliminated by England on penalties earlier this week.
Mina became the first defender in the history of the prestigious competition to have scored a hat-trick of goals in his first three games at the world stage. However, he has struggled to break into the Catalans first-team last season following his arrival from Palmeiras during the January transfer window. Some sources are now claiming that Ernesto Valverde’s side are willing to allow him to depart this summer and already has a replacement lined up in the form of Sevilla‘s Clement Lenglet.
However, the Catalans are more in favour of a loan deal rather than a permanent move which the Blues of Merseyside are willing to agree with. When asked about his future in a recent interview, Mina was quoted to have said,
“In my head right now, I am thinking about returning to Barca.
“Now’s not the moment to talk about my future, but the World Cup has helped me rediscover myself and reaffirm myself as a footballer.
“God gave me my talent. What I need is to always play to the best of my ability and enjoy my football. After that, I’m always calm and I trust God.”
The Merseyside outfit were able to clinch an 8th placed finish in the league table last season. However, the new Toffees boss Marco Silva would be aware that he needs to bring in some quality players in this ongoing window in order to build a strong squad capable of competing with the league’s big boys in the upcoming campaign.
The potential signing of Mina will undoubtedly bolster Everton’s defensive options ahead of the new campaign. The Toffees have some talented centre-backs in their squad which include Ashley Williams, Phil Jagielka, Mason Holgate, Michael Keane and Jonjoe Kenny competing for a starting berth in Silva’s first-team. The addition of Mina will definitely improve the Merseyside team significantly and add more competition for places within their squad.

It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of the Colombian international and whether he ends up making a switch to Goodison Park before the start of the new season.
